Fall Safety Meeting Topics Tailgate Safety Topic

Falls remain the leading cause of fatal injuries in construction, and they cause serious injuries in general industry as well. Most falls are preventable, and most start with a hazard someone noticed but did not report. Today we will talk about the fall hazards on this site, how to prevent them, and what to do when you spot one.

Common Fall Hazards

Unprotected edges and floor openings are among the most serious fall hazards. So are unguarded scaffolds, ladders used the wrong way, roofs, and elevated work areas without guardrails or fall protection. Falls also happen on stairs and at loading docks, and clutter near edges makes every one of these hazards worse.

Prevention Measures

  • Use guardrails, covers, and safety nets where they are required, and never remove them without permission.
  • Wear fall protection where it is required, and inspect harnesses, lanyards, and anchor points before each use.
  • Keep floors, platforms, and scaffolds clear of clutter and materials.
  • Use the right ladder for the job, set it on stable ground, and tie it off where needed.
  • Report damaged guardrails, missing covers, and broken equipment right away.

What to Do When You Spot a Fall Hazard

Stop and report it to your supervisor before work continues in that area. Do not work around a missing guardrail or an uncovered opening, and do not use fall protection equipment that looks damaged or has been involved in a fall.

Questions to Discuss
