Guardrail Systems: Requirements and Daily Inspection

Morning, crew. Guardrails are the fall protection we walk past a hundred times a day without thinking about them. That’s exactly why we’re checking them today — because we trust them without looking.

Why This Matters

A guardrail that’s been bumped by equipment, had a board removed for material access, or was never tightened down right isn’t going to stop anybody. Guardrails get relied on constantly, so they need to be right every single day, not just when they were first built.

What OSHA Requires

Under 1926.502(b), the top rail has to be 42 inches above the walking surface, plus or minus 3 inches. It needs to withstand 200 pounds of force applied downward or outward without dropping below 39 inches. A midrail goes in roughly halfway between the top rail and the floor and must hold 150 pounds. If there’s a risk of tools or materials falling off the edge, toeboards are required too — at least 3.5 inches tall and able to withstand 50 pounds.

Daily Inspection Checklist

  • Check that top rails haven’t been removed or left unsecured after material deliveries.
  • Look for damage from forklifts, carts, or swinging loads.
  • Make sure posts are firmly anchored and not wobbling.
  • Confirm midrails and toeboards are still in place, not just the top rail.
  • Never use a guardrail as a tie-off point for fall arrest — it’s not rated for that.
