Fall Protection Basics: Understanding a Personal Fall Arrest System
Good morning, everybody. Before we climb anything today, let’s talk about the gear that keeps us alive if we slip: the personal fall arrest system, or PFAS. A lot of us call it a harness, but there’s more to it than the straps.
Why This Matters
A fall arrest system only works if every piece of it is right. That means the right harness, the right connector, and an anchor point strong enough to hold you. Miss one piece and the whole system can fail at the worst possible moment.
What a Complete System Includes
Under OSHA 1926.502(d), a personal fall arrest system has three parts working together: a full body harness, a connecting device like a shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline, and an anchorage point. The anchorage has to hold at least 5,000 pounds per worker attached, or be designed by a qualified person with a safety factor of at least two. Snaphooks and connectors must be self-locking so they can’t roll open under load.
How to Wear and Use It Correctly
- Put the harness on so the D-ring sits between your shoulder blades, not off to the side.
- Tighten straps snug but not restrictive — you should be able to slide a flat hand under each strap.
- Never tie off to a guardrail, scaffold frame, or anything not rated as an anchor point.
- Keep your connecting device as short as possible to limit free fall distance.
- Inspect the entire system before every use — webbing, stitching, hardware, and labels.
Did you know? OSHA limits free fall distance to 6 feet with a standard shock-absorbing lanyard. That’s why anchor point height and connector length both matter — too much slack and you could hit the ground or a lower level before the system ever engages.
